Its hot here so I normally wear sandals every day. I heard you can get them from wearing tight shoes. I havent been. Or you get it from filing the sides of your nails...i dont do that either. I just noticed my toe hurting 2 days ago and it was a bit swollen and today a tiny bit of pus coming out of the side....(gross i know sorry). the side of my toe does have a cut on it though. i didnt know if it could be something else or not???How do you get an ingrown toenail?
It's probably not an ingrown toenail. When I was 10 years old I had an infected toenail. What you just described sounds exactly how mine was. The doctor told me to soak my foot in warm water and epson salt twice a day for like 15-20 minutes each. Also use hydrogen peroxide, that'll help clear out any infection. Wrap and bandaid with neosporin around your toe to prevent the cut from getting germs or dirt in it. The Neosporin will also help prevent and heal any inefction that may be there.
If you haven't worn tight shoes or cut your toenails too short then you don't have an ingrown toenail. I've had 2 ingrown toenails that have had to be surgically removed. They're very painful to the touch. You can hardly walk and even having the sheets over them at night will hurt. How do you get an ingrown toenail?
If the toenail is ingrown, you will be able to see it poking into your toe. And it will be cripplingly painful. If it gets bad, surgery is required. See your doctor right away.
It just happens. Sometimes your toenail grows the wrong way into your skin. There is really nothing you can do about it but cut it down and hope it grows the right way next time.
Everything you ever wanted to know about ingown toenails:

You get them from not cutting your toenails often enough, tight shoes, sometimes they just occur. Also, your cut may just be infected...
Tight shoes, rounding the corners, and believe it or not genetic pre-disposition are all factors in ingrown toe nails.
I get ingrown toenails from just not cutting my nails. Except what happened to you sounds different. You might want to make sure the cut isn't infected.
You get them from chopping your toenails in a wierd direction, so then they grown in the direction and dig in to your skin
hahaaa
Usually you get it from cutting your nails too short but it might be something else with those symptoms.
It is only an infected cut !
u have an ingrown toenail
go to the doctors
There isn't enough info to know for sure, since you also know that your toe is cut, but where?
Get some very warm (as warm as you can stand it) water and add a good amount of salt and soak your toe for about 10 minutes. keeping the water warm will help more than if the water is cooler. Do this about 3-4 times a day.
After you do the soak, cleans the toe with some white vinegar and let it dry, then put a stretchy bandaid on the toenail and as you wrap it, you can pull it so that you pull the skin away from the nail so it takes some of the pressure off.
It should get better with the salt soaks, but if not, see a doctor.
Also, if the nail is cut too short on the sides, it can cause the nail to put more pressure on the skin. You can cut a V at the top of the nail to relieve some of the pressure on the skin around the nail.
